Roadside Chapels Lasting Image of The Polish Landscape

They stand on the roads not only in the provinces but also in big cities. They arouse curiosity and often criticism of backwrdness. We see that someone still cares about them. Fresh flowers periodically appear in roadside chapels. Usually older women bring them.

Nobody knows since when chapels began to be built along roads in Poland. This is a very old custom. One of the information reports that it was the custom of landowners to bring chapels on their property as a symbol of supports for the Catholic faith and prayers for divine protection. Tehy also helped residents of villages distant from the church to prectice their faith during religious ceremonies. They were like a phone booth to God.

Chapeles were also erected to commemorate the histoic event, like today monuments are being built. In the past, the chapel quickly became landmarks along the roads.

Roadside chapele are not currently built. We find the most numerous in the province of but in large cities they retained their status despite the strong urbanization. They conflict with contemporary views and architecture but are an expression of respect for tradition. (Brux)
