Poles have their own Polish car. This is a “Syrena”.

The only Polish car that Poles have released is Syrena (Siren – legendary figure living in Vistula river). Of course, we are talking about post-war Soviet Poland when the automotive industry was reviving. Destroyed war, the economy absorbing a lot of money, additionally burdened with tributes to the big brother in the east, did not have an easy start. Destroyed Germany received loans from the US, and destroyed Poland had to share its income with the East. In such conditions, there was no money for innovation in the automotive industry. Cars produced in Poland were under foreign licenses. Every idea for a national car model was crossed out as too expensive. And so it is today. All Polish car designs are considered a loss of potential in advance. That is why there is no Polish car brand.

However, Syrena is the only model of a Polish car designed by Poles. It is a kind of symbol of the fight for freedom and independence in the automotive industry.

In May 1953, the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic decided to design a small car. The car was to be technologically cheap. FSO chief designer Karol Pionnier became the head of the team responsible for the project. The first pre-prototype copy was shown on December 31, 1953, and in 1954 two more were presented. Their drive was intended specially developed for Syrena by a team led by Eng. Fryderyk Bluemke two-stroke engine unit with two cylinders, capacity 690 cm3 and power 22 HP.
This is how the Syrena Polish car model was presented at the Poznan Fair in June 1955 (10 years after the war ended). The Syrena 100 model introduced to production on March 20, 1957 required further improvements. In 1960 the improved Syrena 101 model appeared, and in 1963 the Syrena 103 model. In 1972, production of the 105 model began, which lasted until 1983, giving way to the Fiat 126p market and the wave of used cars imported from the west. The production of Syrena’s car was discontinued. That’s how the Polish automotive passion died.

Attempts are being made to revive the Polish brand. In 2012, two Polish private companies launched a prototype of the new Syrena, which was presented in 2014. It was a small, urban Vosco S106 (Syrena 106) vehicle equipped with a 1398 cm3 internal combustion engine connected to a 5-speed gearbox.

It seems that the process of homologation of internal combustion cars of domestic production is very difficult and there is no hope that the production of any Polish car with an internal combustion engine will start in Poland. There are chances for pro-ecological solutions, therefore work on another Polish electric car project is underway and it is Vosco S106EV, and in 2020 a new prototype design will be presented. However, there are big doubts whether this presentation will take place. There are opinions regarding the financial clumsiness of the new Syrena producers. (Brux, photo: Leszek owner the yellow car)
