They resemble a rabbit or a squirrel. Increasingly, they are bought home as a gift for children. Their breeding in Poland dates back to the 1950s, when Stanislaw Rzewski brought them to Poznan. There, the first chinchilla farm in Poland was started.
Chinchillas come from South America. Currently, they occur only in breeding. There were no attempts to eradicate the population in the natural environment. Mr. Wacław Tylinski, who is 86 years old, is one of the pioneers of chinchilla breeding in Poland. He has been breeding these animals since 1967 (53 years). His breeding in Lodz was now one of the oldest in most periods of up to 400 mothers, which gave about 1000 pieces of sewing. Mr. Wałcaw bought his first chinchillas from Stanislaw Rzewski for an amount equal to the price of a Small Fiat 126p or 50.000 PLN (12.500 USD). “I collected the car but I liked it so much that I bought them (chinchillas) for the money collected”. It is worth remembering that these were the days when owning a fiat 126p was an unsurpassed dream of every Pole and a symbol of affluence.

“Chinchillas are five times less than a rabbit and do not get sick unless they are too dynamically different from food” informs Mr. Wencess. Food comes from Germany and very respects its sterility. It is usually mild animals in the environment and other chinchillas, but they have to get used to the smell. The mother usually has two young, sometimes there are fours.
Every two years, the Poznan Fair organizes quality competitions for szyszyli breeding. Mr. Wencessław has repeatedly participated in them as a jury evaluating and an expert species. According to the 5-step scale, chinchillas are assessed for weight and standard hair. The highest valued specimens are bred for slaughter in order to obtain fur from them. Less valued they end up as pet breeding. Currently, for a model specimen you have to pay 120 PLN (30 USD) and for a specimen for home breeding about 80 PLN (20 USD). (Brux)
