Desert in Miniature

The desert is called it, but the term can be disappointing. The Blendow Desert is the result of human activity, which, after intensive felling of trees growing over barren soil, caused a strong soil reosion. The desert covers an area of 33 km2 and its central is crossed by the Biala River. The sand in the desert is dense and its surface is largely overgrown with vegetation that requires a sandy base. In the fifties, attempts were made to reclaim the desert area by afforesting its border. Currently, efforts are being made to protect this ecosystem from afforestation while maintaining its present sandy state.

The desert is frequently visited by tourists, inhabitants of Polish Silesia, who, far from the sea, treat the desert sand as a beach.
The amount of rubbish left behind is similar for the seaside. It is a favorite place for a bonfire for young people. Many sports events take place here, and the desert is also used by the army for proving grounds. (Brux)
