Like every country, Poland also has its center. The surface of this country resembles a square, and once someone easily calculated that the geometric center of Poland lies in Piatek (Friday). It is not about the day of the week, but the village that is called that. Piątek is a small town with less than 1.5 thousand inhabitants. But why Friday (vilage) is Friday?
Without going into history and briefly, we can say that a certain small town has become the property of the bishopric (12th century). Therefore, it acquired a greater administrative importance, and because its location was located in the central part of the administrative region, it was a kind of a shopping center. The church authorities also took part in building such an image, benefiting from the development of the town, which gradually became a regional fair center (14th century).

We don’t know why, maybe because of some regulation, but here Friday was the most important market day of the week. These events have become a permanent image of the town, strong enough to be marked in its nomenclature. This is how Piatek (Friday) was created, a town located in the geometric center of Poland.
Today, Piatek, as the center of Poland, does not surprise with anything, but can rather disappoint. On Fridays, nothing special happens, and the symbolic market from Friday has been moved to Monday, which is not a tourist attraction at all. Why was tradition not upheld? In the nearby city of Lodz, which was established many years later, there is a market that was held on Fridays in the past. Maybe Piatek has lost its importance for this city?
This is not the only bad luck that hit Piatek. In the past, the city was damaged by wars and burned down twice.
To make matters worse, recently someone replaced the abacus with a computer and calculated that the central part of Poland is 17 km away from Piatek. But the center of Poland in the middle of nowhere does not look very good, so it is worth staying with Piątek, even if we have to call it unlucky fellow (Brux).
