It is the most famous ZOO in Poland. Every Pole has heard of him. It is not the merit of current marketing but of some marriage, which in the past managed this ZOO, making it a symbol of popularity. This is a story worth knowing.
When two animal science students miss Hania and a young man Antoni as part of the internship they went to the Wroclaw ZOO, they did not expect their future there. It was 1956. u met, got married and tied their lives with the ZOO. Hania specialized in veterinary medicine and Antoni in species difficult to breed in captivity. Hania specialized in veterinary medicine and Antoni in species difficult to breed in captivity.
But no one would have heard of them today had it not been for the proposition of the already deceased journalist Ryszard Badowski, a man of legend considered the greatest Polish traveler and filmmaker. He gained his popularity thanks to the television program “Six Continents Club”. It was he who suggested Antoni running a television program on animals, entitled “With a Camera Among Animals”.

The idea was found interesting and its first episode was aired in January 1971. In Wrocław, no one has yet expected that their city would build this media program. Mr. and Mrs. Gucwinski and their animal charges became so popular that Wrocław was associated mainly with a ZOO, and visiting Polish zoos became a very fashionable way of spending free time. For 30 years, 750 episodes of “With a Camera Among Animals” were broadcast. One episode about white and red storks (the symbol of Poland) was not allowed by the communist censorship. A richly illustrated with photos album “Friends of The ZOO” (1977) with encyclopaedic content was also published. After flipping through it, readers already knew half of the inhabitants of the Wroclaw ZOO.
However, in 2006, the city authorities took the work of the Mr. and Mrs. Gucwinski, who were removed from the ZOO. It was a shock for many Poles. And for the Gucwinski, broken hearts. How did it come about?
This is politics and an example of how you can become a victim in Poland. In 2001, due to Ms Hanna’s election campaign (she joined the Sejm on behalf of SLD-UP), the broadcast of the TV program “With a camera among animals” was suspended. Officially, it was announced that the program was outdated, but no one from the television presented the concept of refreshing it. Today we watch similar programs but of foreign production.
At the same time, Antoni Gucwinski fell victim to a conspiracy brought up by the VIVA Foundation led by Cezary Kamil Wyszynski, which wanted to promote its presence by discrediting a person known to the media. The VIVA Foundation promoting vegetarianism has accused the Wroclaw Zoo of the Mango copper, who spent 10 years in a concrete isolation room. Gucwinski claimed that the bear had to be isolated because of his aggression and for many years he tried to transfer it, without official effect. The Foundation did not present any aid proposals. We do not know the name of the judge who tortured the Gucwnskis with his sentence. In Poland, there are still more people in cages than animals. It is worth adding that in 2014 the inspection of the Mazowieckie Voivode revealed shortcomings in the foundation’s financial statements.
Today’s Wrocław Zoo is bland. It does not differ much from other developed facilities in Europe. He lacks the spirit and the patronage of the Gucwiński family, something that other zoological gardens do not have, namely the cult of the creator. After visiting the zoo, where the ticket cost more than 15 $ in translation, I did not receive a garden map with the ticket. There were a lot of people in the zoo and it was chaos. There was no designated direction of sightseeing, it is better to visit IKEA for free. On the day off from work, at 5 p.m., guests were expelled from the oceanarium, which is currently the biggest attraction in the ZOO. It is no longer a zoo that instills knowledge and gives a comfortable rest, it is more a machine for drawing money, but if it weren’t for the Mr. and Mrs. Gucwinsky, there would be no money today.
