Kurwa The Most Popular Word in Poland

Everyone says them, or at least everyone in Poland knows them. The word is kurwa (fucking) is not of Polish origin, but Poles like it very much. The kurwa word is spoken by everyone, from members of state authorities to preschoolers. When learning Polish, you should start with this word and we can already communicate with Poles, because they know what’s going on and treat you like a native.

The word kurwa can be heard everywhere. Someone who says the word kurwa is a serious man, not a nondescript person. But what does the word kurwa mean? Actually, nobody knows for sure, not even those who keep putting this word out.

At first, I was convinced that it was a contemptuous term for women without sexual responsibility and no moral backbone. But the circumstances of hearing this word at any time and in any place do not indicate that Poles are crazy about such women. It looks more like an emotional charge, the use of the word kurwa indicates a state of irritation. Cats wag their tails, dogs growling and Poles say the word kurwa. Only for God’s sake why are all Poles still so angry?

It looks very primitive, it cannot be denied that the Polish nation is quite primitive to itself and perhaps very much trying to maintain such perception as a national value. But doesn’t it bother anyone? To answer I will use a very interesting example, typical for Poland.

I live in a large housing estate with lots of high-rise houses. Here they call them skyscrapers. I chose an apartment in a building near a park because it resembled Central Park in New York, but in a large miniature. Although the park is small, it is still bustling with life, especially at night. And it made me wonder because every night there is a show of drunken actors who alternately chant the word kurwa like a mantra. It lasts from evening until morning. There is no curfew in Poland. A strange ritual, I thought, and even stranger that there is an advance on this form of culture in the rent. One day, a performance with the word kurwa in the lead role was taking place in the park during the day. A group of Poles on the holy water in the center of the park were getting ready for a mutual fight. Heard nothing but the kurwa words screamed. Many small children were playing nearby. I thought to myself – parents will intervene soon. But nothing like that happened.

So I wrote a letter to the administration board describing the event and protesting against the forced payment on the culture that the administrator settles for. I expected a constructive response. But the president of the administration in the person of Kamila Szymanska does not see anything extraordinary in this. The story did not say sorry, but rather something like that it is my fault because I am the world of it.

I thought, okay, the president of the estate administration is an incompetent person, a random simpleton on a stall that nobody controls. Maybe the administration is some gang or mafia where it launches its money here. But there is also the City Hall and the Resident Management Department. So I inform about my shallow contact with the administrator the appropriate cell at the City Hall
(it is not known who is the head of this Department). The answer was such a surprise that I couldn’t believe it. The City Hall informs that the estate is a separate property and has no influence on its behavior. Lack of emotion and empathy. No credibility, it means that such a housing estate is some other country, which has its own laws. Perfect place for gangs and mafias indeed.

And this is a very interesting example of a typical Polish administrative culture, where nobody is responsible for anything but takes money for it. In Poland, you can’t do anything normally, that’s why Poles focus their rage on the word kurwa. This curse no longer surprises anyone. Kurwa in Poland is a cure for everything. For officials in Poland, kurwa word is better than their effort to work, and this is transferred to other aspects of life. This is how children learn how to deal with emotions in Polish reality. In Poland, everyone has the right to the word kurwa, because this is how you have no other rights. (Brux)
