Corpus Christi in Poland

For me, the Corpus Christi is the most interesting festivity of the Catholic Church in Poland. Each parish and church organizes a procession that comes out with the Eucharist from the church, circling it on nearby streets. Along the way, the procession stops at the altars specially prepared for this festival. There, the Eucharist is set up and the priest leading the procession reads a fragment of the Gospel and then the procession singing religious songs goes to the next altar.

By procession, the altars are decorated with branches of birch or hazel tree. This is a very old tradition. Many people tear off several branches from each altar and take home as a source of happiness. An old lady told me that in the past these branches were put into the ground in the fields to make the crops successful.

Sources of information say that the first Corpus Christi ounts in Poland were carried out in 1320 as premises in Krakow. It was a hundred years after the announcement of the obligation to celebrate this holiday in the Catholic Church. Corpus Christi is a colloquial name, actually it is a celebration of the Holy Body and Blood of Christ, too long a name to pronounce, which is why it is widely operated on a short form. It always takes place on June Thursday determined earlier by the Church.

For Catholics, the Eucharist or the symbol of the body of Christ in a cereal wafer is the most important element of worship. Opatus symbolizing the person of Christ is always placed in the Golden Cross. The cross is stored in closure, which is removed only during mass and celebrations. Corpus Christi is a few holiday in which the Eucharist goes for a walk. He goes to people, visit them to pray with them. This is of course a very simplified interpretation, but this is how I understood this message by listening to priests conducting the procession. (Brux)
