The tiny village, in which does not happen on a daily basis, once a year becomes one of the most popular towns in Poland. This happens in June during the celebration of Corpus Christi. Here, the tradition became decorating the road with flower wafers, which was followed by a procession with the Eucharist. The original goal was to mark the road for the procession, but over time the trail took on the character of a more decorative sacred art. Today, every host of the property on the road to his episode, which decoraters according to his own imagination with loose of soil, leaves, branches and flakes of colorful flowers. The hosts do it all on their own with mutual support from their neighbors. I did not notice any artist volunteers organized by the authorities to help.
The whole artistic character of this place would not have been noticed to this day were it not for the world heritage UNESCO entry (2018) at the request of the Minister of Culture. It turns out that this clever treatment is the best element of marketing. Today, the village of Spycimierz is known all over Poland and during the Christmas of Corpus Christi undergoes a siege of tourists. Thousands of cars block access to the town. Visiting this place, I had to give up my car a few kilometers before the goal. It was not possible to get there. Free spaces were filled with stalls, they occupied most of the village area than all flower rugs with a total length of 2 km, but in this way the village earns its expenses.
I also visited Spycimierz the next day after the celebration of Corpus Christi. The village was deserted, the flower carpets were gone, the streets were clean and swept. There was silence as if nothing had happened before. How much effort did the people living along the procession’s route put into this, only one-day exhibition? After all, it is a handful of residents who promote the entire village and allow the mayor of the commune to earn on the trade that takes place on that day. Unfortunately, this handful of UNESCO World Heritage heroes are not rewarded in any way, and must clean up after the event immediately.
I asked a question to the Polish UNESCO Committee, if the Flower Carpets were stung by volunteers and not by residents, and if the money was compensated for the hosts who provide material for flower carpets, would the village still be entered in the registries of national heritage? UNESCO proudly announces on its website that the organization consists of scientists and people with higher education, but my one question turned out to be too difficult for this community, because I have not received an answer to this day.
