Juliszu Machulski’s movie “Sexmission” is set in a fictitious world where, as a result of scientific neglect, radioactive contamination of the environment occurred, and civilization had to take cover underground.
We are moving into this world with two main characters who participated in the scientific experiment of the first human hibernation attempt. The characters are awakened only in a different reality no longer as a continuation of scientific research but an archeological discovery. This other reality is the world build underground that protects civilization from ground contamination.
The characters are surprised to in themselves in a world they have never imagined before, in the underground world of the future consisting only of women.
The movie in an interesting way shows two ways of man’s response to such a surprising reality along with the changing mood in the face of deepening awareness and understanding of the situation in which man finds himself.
“Sesmission” also criticized a system based on maintaining social order by keeping the nation ignorant and in control of this state. Such a model of society is easy to manage.
The movie shows the aspect of indoctrination and behavior monitoring. It is an attempt to smuggle some warning about the contradiction that the technological development of civilization may coincide with the increase in the limitations of social awareness. Man adopting this model of life can get stuck in totalitarian sef-control. Our characters, not affected by the evolution of views characteristic of women’s underground civilization pose a threat to public order.
This refers to frequently encountered nationalist and totalitarian governments, widely accepted by manipulated society. We see such views in today’s Poland. Sexmission was watched by every Pole, but did everyone understand his message?
The movie went mildly through the communist censorship of the Polish authorities, but was severely criticized by American feminist circles. The work directed by Machulski this is one of the last outstanding films belonging to the classics of Polish comedy (one of the most expensive in production about $ 17,5 million) Current productions are a pathetic attempt to continue the achievements of Polish cinema where the intelligent joke has been replaced by vulgarism recognizing that it is currently the most amusing primitive Pole.
