Polish Movie: Icarus (2019)

The film “Icarus” (Ikar), directed by Maciej Pieprzyca, is an attempt to illustrate the episodic threads of the life of the Polish jazz musician, Mieczyslaw Kosz, who composed at the turn of 67-73. The film is not a direct biography, but only an inspiration for the musician’s story and is a psychological drama. The film shows the realities of life in Poland in the 70s and the condition of a blind artist emotionally struggling with his disability and relations with the closest people. The creator of the film was based on Krzysztof Karpiński’s book “Only Sorrow is Beautiful. A Tale of Mieczyslaw Kosz”, published in 1990. The film omits the aspect of communist criticism of jazz as an unfavorable influence of American culture, which, thanks to Polish musicians and jazz festival organizers, changed the approach of officials deciding what to listen to and what to play in Poland in the 1970s. The film was completed in 2019, and it is supplemented by another book about the artist who died tragically in Warsaw in 1973. (Brux)
