The World’s First Welded Bridge

It has been preserved as a technological monument. It is in this construction that for the first time in the world instead of rivets, welded joints were used. The method of electric arc welding was patented by Polish engineer Stanislaw Olszewski and Russian engineer Nicholas Benardos in 1885 (France) 1887 (USA). Political curiosity: German media say that Olszewski was Russian, and Russian media that he only sponsored the invention of the Russian inventor Benardos although he was of Greek origin.

The construction of a 27-meter bridge over the Sludawia River in Maurzyce was completed in 1929, Fascism was built in Germany, modern bridges were built in Poland. The design of the bridge belongs to the engineer Stefan Bryla, who participated in the construction of the tallest buildings in the world at that time, who with Wenczeslaw Poniz they developed a bridge construction without rivets, but lighter and more economical in material by 16 tons of steel.

During World War II, Stefan Bryla prepared a ten-year plan for the economic recovery of Poland from war damage. He remained an active academic teacher as the dean of the secret Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. As a result of the denunciation of one of his students, on November 16, 1943, he was arrested with his family and shot on December 3 at the intersection of Pulawska and Goworka Streets in Warsaw. The corpses taken by the Germans were never found. His symbolic grave is located at the Powazki Cemetery in Warsaw.

In 1964, the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians established the Stefan Bryla for scientific and research achievements. The prize is awarded every year. (Brux)
